Originally performing psychedelic and progressive rock, they transitioned to a heavier musical approach with their 1970 album Deep Purple in Rock. The group gained recognition as pioneers of heavy metal and hard rock, earning a place alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath in the influential hard rock movement of the early-to-mid 1970s. They achieved the distinction of being listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as the world's loudest band following a 1972 performance at London's Rainbow Theatre. With global sales exceeding 100 million records, Deep Purple has also spawned notable spinoff projects including Rainbow, Whitesnake, and Gillan, cementing their significant impact on rock and metal music.
