Curtis James Jackson III, professionally known as 50 Cent, is an American rapper, actor, television producer, record executive, and businessman from Queens, New York. He began his music career in 1996, recording his debut album Power of the Dollar for Columbia Records in 1999–2000. After being shot nine times in May 2000, the album's release was halted and he was dropped from the label. His fortunes changed when Detroit-based rapper Eminem discovered his 2002 mixtape Guess Who's Back? and signed him to Shady Records. 50 Cent became a prominent figure in hip-hop and gangsta rap, establishing himself as both a recording artist and entrepreneur across music, film, and television.
