The Temptations are an American vocal group established in Detroit, Michigan, in 1961, initially performing under the name The Elgins. Signed to Motown Records, they became one of the most commercially successful ensembles in popular music history, achieving prominence from the 1960s through the mid-1970s. Working with producer Norman Whitfield, the group gained significant recognition with the Top 10 single "Cloud Nine" in 1968, which helped establish psychedelic soul as a musical direction. The ensemble distinguished itself through intricate choreography, layered vocal harmonies, and polished visual presentation. Their contributions substantially influenced the development of rhythm and blues and soul music, and they have sold tens of millions of records worldwide.
