Otis Redding was an American singer and songwriter who became one of the most influential figures in soul music and rhythm and blues. Active from 1941 until his death in 1967, Redding earned the nickname "King of Soul" for his powerful vocal delivery, which drew heavily from gospel traditions. His distinctive singing style shaped the work of countless soul artists throughout the 1960s and remains central to his legacy as a seminal force in American popular music. Redding died in a plane crash at the height of his career.
