The Supremes were an American girl group that originated in Detroit, Michigan, initially performing as the Primettes before adopting their better-known name. As Motown Records' flagship act throughout the 1960s, they became the label's most commercially successful group and achieved unprecedented mainstream popularity as an American vocal ensemble. Working extensively with Motown's Holland–Dozier–Holland production team, the Supremes accumulated twelve number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Their rise to prominence opened doors for subsequent African-American soul and R&B artists seeking widespread commercial appeal. Billboard ranked them as the 16th greatest Hot 100 artist in history. The group remained active from 1961 until their final performance in 1977.
