Spandau Ballet were an English pop band formed in Islington, London, in 1979. Emerging from the post-punk dance underground of the capital, they initially performed as The Applause, serving as the house band for the Blitz Kids club night and playing European-influenced dance music. Rising to prominence during the New Romantic movement of the early 1980s, they became one of the era's most commercially successful acts, achieving 23 hit singles worldwide and selling 25 million albums. The band's output included eight UK top 10 albums and drew from diverse musical influences spanning punk rock, soul, and the classic American vocal traditions of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. They disbanded in 1990 after establishing themselves as key figures in the Second British Invasion of American pop charts.
