The Marcels were an American doo-wop group that emerged from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1959. The five-member ensemble, featuring lead vocalist Cornelius Harp alongside Fred Johnson, Gene Bricker, Ron Mundy, and Richard Knauss, became known for reimagining established popular music standards through a rock and roll lens. Signed to Colpix Records, the group's name drew inspiration from the marcel wave, a fashionable hairstyle of the era, suggested by Priscilla Johnson, the sister of bass singer Fred Johnson. Their approach to classic material helped bridge doo-wop traditions with the emerging rock and roll sound of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
