The song was originally recorded by Julie Covington for a 1976 concept album titled Evita and was subsequently incorporated into the 1978 musical production of the same name. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice created the composition while studying the biography of Argentine first lady Eva Perón. The piece serves multiple functions within the show, appearing at the start of both acts and near the conclusion.
