The lyrics were created by Colombian songwriter Kike Santander, who also served as producer alongside Estefan's husband Emilio Estefan. The track is an upbeat dance-pop and house song that was initially intended for Celine Dion. Epic Records released it as the lead single on April 14, 1998, to U.S. contemporary hit radio stations, and a Spanish-language version titled "Corazón Prohibido" was also recorded.
