Huddie William Ledbetter, professionally known as Lead Belly, was an American folk and blues musician born in 1888. He became renowned for his powerful singing voice and exceptional skill with the twelve-string guitar. Over his career spanning from 1888 to 1949, Lead Belly performed across folk, blues, and country blues genres, establishing himself as a crucial figure in American folk music. He gained lasting recognition for popularizing numerous folk standards, among them "In the Pines," "Goodnight, Irene," "Midnight Special," and "Cotton Fields," many of which remain influential in contemporary music.
