Laura Branigan was an American pop and synth-pop singer born in 1952. She achieved major international success in the 1980s with her cover of "Gloria," originally by Umberto Tozzi. Released in 1982, the single became a platinum-certified hit, spending 36 weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and peaking at number two—a record for female artists at the time. The song also topped charts in Australia and Canada. Her follow-up single "Self Control" reached number one in Canada and Germany in 1984, reaching number four in the United States. Both tracks achieved top-10 success in the UK. Branigan died from a brain aneurysm in 2004.
