Isaac Hayes composed and performed this soul and funk-influenced theme for the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film Shaft, released in 1971. The single came out two months after the movie's soundtrack on Stax Records' Enterprise label. It achieved significant chart success, reaching number two on the Billboard Soul Singles chart and topping the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1971, plus reaching number one in Canada in December. The track also performed well on the Easy Listening chart and is sometimes regarded as an early disco recording.
