The Commodores released "Sail On" in 1979 as the first single from their album Midnight Magic. Written by Lionel Richie, the song achieved significant chart success, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the Cash Box Top 100 singles chart. It performed well on both US and UK music charts during that year. Richie later collaborated with Tim McGraw to record a version for the 2012 album Tuskegee.
