Karma is an ancient Indian philosophical concept describing the principle of cause and effect, central to multiple Eastern religions and belief systems. The term denotes action, work, or deed, alongside its resultant consequences. In traditional Indian religious frameworks, karma operates as a mechanism whereby an individual's intentions and actions directly shape their future circumstances. Positive intentions and virtuous deeds are understood to generate favorable karma and contribute to more auspicious rebirths, while negative intentions and harmful actions produce unfavorable karma and less desirable rebirths. However, certain religious texts present alternative interpretations that decouple the relationship between karma and rebirth cycles.
