Josephine Bradley and Her Jive Rhythm Orchestra

Josephine Bradley was a pioneering ballroom dancer and instructor who fundamentally shaped modern ballroom dance. Born in Dublin but raised in London as the youngest of eight children, Bradley became instrumental in standardising the foundational techniques of foxtrot, tango, quickstep, and waltz through her work with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. Her contributions to formalising these English ballroom dances, now recognised in the World Dance Council's International Dancesport category, earned her the informal recognition as "The First Lady of the Ballroom." Bradley stood among the earliest professional ballroom dance educators to establish codified teaching methods that would influence the discipline globally.
