The Almanac Singers

The Almanac Singers was an American folk music ensemble founded in New York City in 1940 by Millard Lampell, Lee Hays, and Pete Seeger, with Woody Guthrie joining the group shortly after. The ensemble concentrated on socially conscious songs addressing war, racism, and labor rights, aligning themselves with the Popular Front movement of the era. The members believed that music could serve as a vehicle for progressive social change and activism. The group remained active through the early 1940s, leaving a significant mark on the tradition of politically engaged American folk music.
