An English rock band called the Zombies recorded this song as the closing track on their 1968 album Odessey and Oracle. The keyboardist Rod Argent composed it, and the band laid down the recording at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in September 1967. The song gained unexpected commercial success in America more than a year after its initial release, eventually reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the Cashbox chart. It remains among the band's most recognizable works and is considered a defining psychedelic hit of the 1960s.
