First recorded by British rock band Dire Straits, the song was written by the band's lead vocalist Mark Knopfler and produced by John Carter. Capitol Records released it as the album's fifth single in November 1984 and became one of Turner's biggest hits.
Commercially, "Private Dancer" reached number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number three on Billboard's Hot Black Singles chart. It had moderate international success, peaking at number 26 on the UK Singles Chart.
