Eric Carmen's composition was released by Arista Records in December 1975 as the opening single from his self-titled debut album. The song incorporates the second movement of Rachmaninoff's 1900–01 Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor in its verse, while the chorus draws from "Let's Pretend," a track Carmen previously recorded with the Raspberries in 1972. Hugh McCracken performed the slide guitar solo. The track achieved significant commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming Carmen's most successful pop chart entry.
