Grandmaster Melle Mel & the Furious Five is an American hip hop group that emerged in 1979. The ensemble was fronted by Melvin Glover, known professionally as Grandmaster Melle Mel, who served as the group's lead vocalist and primary songwriter. As a central figure in early hip hop, Melle Mel helped establish the genre's foundational sound and lyrical approach during a formative period of rap music history.
