Gilbert Bécaud was a French singer, composer, and pianist who became one of the country's most enduring entertainment figures. Born François Gilbert Léopold Silly in 1927, he earned the nickname "Monsieur 100,000 Volts" for his dynamic stage presence and emotional intensity. His international breakthrough came with songs including "Nathalie" and "Et maintenant" (1961), the latter gaining worldwide recognition when adapted into English as "What Now My Love." Bécaud maintained his popularity across five decades, recognizable by his signature dark blue suits paired with a polka-dotted tie. The Paris Olympia became his artistic home; his sold-out performances there in the mid-1950s established his legendary status. He continued performing until his death in 2001.
