Stevie Nicks composed this song around 1979, with early demo versions recorded in 1980 by Tom Moncrieff for potential inclusion on her solo debut album. Following the death of Nicks' friend Robin Anderson from leukemia, the song gained added meaning and Nicks dedicated it to Anderson in subsequent live performances. Released in August 1982 as the second single from Fleetwood Mac's thirteenth studio album Mirage, it became the album's second most successful track, reaching number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and achieving number one status on contemporary hit radio.
