The song was composed by Bert Berns and initially performed by American soul artist Solomon Burke, who recorded it in 1961. Following its 1962 release, it became Burke's second single to chart on both the Billboard Hot R&B Sides and Hot 100 singles charts. Burke also performed the track on American Bandstand in March 1962.
