"One Step Beyond" was originally composed by Jamaican ska artist Prince Buster as a B-side track for his 1964 single "Al Capone". The British band Madness recorded a cover version for their self-titled debut studio album released in 1979. While Buster's original was predominantly instrumental with occasional vocal mentions of the title, the Madness rendition included a spoken introduction by Chas Smash and a persistently repeated background vocal phrase. The video received significant airtime on MTV during its early days.
