Emerson, Lake & Palmer were an English progressive rock supergroup established in London in 1970, comprising Keith Emerson from the Nice on keyboards, Greg Lake formerly of King Crimson, and Carl Palmer of Atomic Rooster. The band achieved substantial commercial success throughout their active period until 2011, selling an estimated 48 million records worldwide and earning nine RIAA gold certifications in the United States. They became one of the defining progressive rock acts of the 1970s, known for blending classical music influences with jazz and symphonic rock arrangements. Emerson's distinctive approach to keyboards—featuring the Hammond organ, Moog synthesizer, and piano—defined much of their signature sound and visual presentation.
