This song was written by Kris Kristofferson with co-writing credit to Fred Foster, who suggested the concept. Roger Miller originally performed it, but Janis Joplin's version, released after her death, became a major success. Her rendition reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971, becoming only the second posthumous number-one single in U.S. chart history. Billboard ranked it as the eleventh song of 1971. Other artists including Gordon Lightfoot and Jerry Lee Lewis also recorded versions.
