"Ben" was created by Don Black and Walter Scharf for a 1972 film of the same name. Lee Montgomery performed it in the film, while Michael Jackson recorded a version for Motown that played over the closing credits. Jackson's single achieved significant commercial success, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for one week—his first solo number one hit in the US—and was ranked the twentieth song of 1972 by Billboard. The track also topped the ARIA Charts for eight weeks and peaked at number seven on the UK Singles Chart.
