Don Azpiazú

Don Azpiazú was a prominent Cuban orchestral conductor who brought authentic Cuban music to North American audiences during the 1920s and 1930s. Leading the Havana Casino Orchestra, he achieved international success when the ensemble traveled to New York City in 1930 and recorded "Peanut Vendor," which became one of the most significant hits in Cuban music history, selling over one million copies and earning a gold disc from the RIAA. Azpiazú's innovative approach combined traditional Cuban instruments and dance styles with North American vocalists, helping to establish the genre's popularity in the United States. His orchestra featured accomplished musicians including trumpeter Julio Cueva and vocalist Antonio Machín.
