Dinosaur Jr. is an American rock band formed in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1984 by J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph. Initially recording for independent labels, the group became recognized as a key force in shaping American alternative rock during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Internal disagreements prompted significant lineup changes, including Barlow's departure and the subsequent arrival of guitarist Mike Johnson. After shifting to major-label releases and navigating further personnel adjustments, the band disbanded in 1997. The original three members reunited in 2005, producing five additional albums. Their influence spans noise rock, indie rock, and alternative rock aesthetics.
