Tracy Chapman's debut album was released by Elektra Records in April 1988 following her discovery by a Tufts University student named Brian Koppelman in 1987. The recording took place at Powertrax studio in Hollywood, California. Koppelman promoted a demo recording of Chapman performing one song to radio stations, which led to her being signed to the label.
