John Denver and Mike Taylor co-wrote this track, which was recorded in 1972 and served as the title track for Denver's 1972 album of the same name. The song became commercially successful, reaching number 9 on the US Hot 100 chart in 1973 and ranking 29th on that year's year-end charts. It is one of Colorado's two official state songs. Denver reported that the composition required an unusually extended nine-month writing period. In 2017, the Recording Industry Association of America granted the record Gold certification due to over 500,000 digital downloads.
