"Girlfriend" was originally written by Paul McCartney for Wings' 1978 album London Town, with McCartney initially envisioning Michael Jackson as the vocalist. Jackson subsequently recorded his own version for his 1979 album Off the Wall, which was then released as the fifth and final single from that album in 1980.
