Tony Arata composed this song, which Garth Brooks recorded as the concluding track on his debut album. The track was subsequently issued as the album's fourth and final single during spring 1990. Many regard it as Brooks' most iconic composition. Brooks has stated that the consecutive commercial success of this song and its successor "Friends in Low Places" were instrumental in establishing his major career breakthrough.
