Ride the Lightning is Metallica's second studio album, released in July 1984 through the independent label Megaforce Records. The band recorded it over three weeks in Copenhagen, Denmark. The album cover features an electric chair being struck by lightning connected to the band's logo, based on artwork conceived by the band members. The title derives from a reference in Stephen King's The Stand relating to execution by electric chair.
