The Box Tops

The Box Tops

The Box Tops are an American rock ensemble that emerged from Memphis, Tennessee in 1967. Operating within the blue-eyed soul genre, the group gained prominence with major hit singles including "The Letter," "Cry Like a Baby," and "Soul Deep." Their musical approach blended contemporary soul recordings, pop standards, and original compositions crafted by their producers Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, and Chips Moman. The band remained active through 2010. Notable for launching the career of vocalist Alex Chilton, who subsequently gained recognition as the frontman of power pop act Big Star and as a recording artist in his own right, the Box Tops secured their place as influential figures in 1960s popular music.
