The song was written by Neil Levenson, inspired by his childhood friend Denise Lefrak. Randy & the Rainbows, an American doo-wop group, recorded a version that became a top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. Blondie later released a cover version retitled "Denis" which achieved significant chart success, reaching number 2 on the UK Singles Chart in 1978.
