Phil Spector composed this song, drawing inspiration from an inscription on his father's gravestone. The Teddy Bears, Spector's only vocal group, made the first recording. The single dominated the Billboard Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks in 1958 and reached number two on the UK New Musical Express chart. The song later achieved commercial success through cover versions by Peter & Gordon in 1965 and Bobby Vinton in 1968.
