Blue Öyster Cult is an American rock band originating from Stony Brook on Long Island, New York, established in 1967. The group synthesized hard rock with psychedelic influences and developed a distinctive style featuring occult and fantastical themes alongside witty wordplay. Their approach became foundational to heavy metal's evolution. The band achieved both cult status and mainstream recognition through landmark tracks including "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" (1976), "Godzilla" (1977), and "Burnin' for You" (1981), which remain fixtures in classic rock radio programming. With approximately 25 million records sold worldwide, including 7 million domestically, Blue Öyster Cult also pioneered early music video adoption, with their visual work featured prominently during MTV's formative years.
