The song was composed by Bert Berns and initially recorded by American soul artist Solomon Burke in 1961. It was released the following year and became Burke's second single to chart on both the Billboard Hot R&B Sides and Hot 100 charts. Burke performed the track on the television program American Bandstand in March 1962.
