This 1966 song became a major hit for the Temptations on Motown Records' Gordy label. Written by Norman Whitfield and Edward Holland Jr., it reached number 13 on the Billboard Pop Chart and dominated the R&B charts for eight non-consecutive weeks at number one. Its strong performance led to Whitfield becoming the group's primary producer, replacing Smokey Robinson. The track gained further recognition in 2004 when it ranked 94th in AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs poll, partly due to its appearance on The Big Chill soundtrack.
