This Beach Boys track was written by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks for the 1967 album Smiley Smile and the unfinished Smile project. Wilson conceived it as an Old West-themed musical comedy intended to surpass the achievements of "Good Vibrations". Released as Brother Records' debut single, it underperformed critically and commercially relative to expectations but still achieved chart success, reaching number 12 in the U.S. and number 8 in the UK.
