"Frosty the Snowman" was composed by Walter "Jack" Rollins and Steve Nelson. Gene Autry and the Cass County Boys made the first recording in 1950, with Jimmy Durante also recording a version that same year. The songwriters created it following the commercial success of Autry's previous holiday recording "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Autry sought another seasonal chart success with this new composition. Like its predecessor, the song later expanded into other formats, notably a television special produced in 1969.
