Johnny Cash wrote this song in 1953 based on material by Gordon Jenkins. It was first recorded and released as a single in 1955, then appeared on Cash's 1957 debut album as the 11th track. The composition blends train song and prison song folk traditions that Cash would revisit throughout his career. It became one of his signature songs and was later featured on a 1962 compilation album. Rolling Stone ranked it 51st among the greatest country songs of all time in 2014.
