The composition may have origins connected to an earlier waltz called "Roll Along, Kentucky Moon," which was recorded by Jimmie Rodgers approximately 15 years prior. The song has become widely covered by numerous artists throughout its history, including Elvis Presley and Paul McCartney. It holds the distinction of being Kentucky's official bluegrass song.
