This 1972 medley arrangement was created by country composer Mickey Newbury and became famous through Elvis Presley's performances, who used it as a concert highlight. The composition combines three nineteenth-century songs: "Dixie," a folk piece about the American South; "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," a Civil War-era Union Army marching hymn; and "All My Trials," a Bahamian lullaby connected to African American spiritual traditions and folk music revival movements.
