Elvis Presley's debut single for RCA Victor was released in January 1956. Written by Mae Boren Axton and Tommy Durden with Presley receiving co-writing credit, the song was inspired by a newspaper account of a man's suicide at a hotel. Axton introduced the composition to Presley at a Nashville country music convention in late 1955, and he recorded it the following month alongside his backing band and notable session musicians.
