"Jingle Bells" is a renowned Christmas composition created by James Lord Pierpont. Originally published in September 1857 under the alternate title "The One Horse Open Sleigh," the song initially had no Christmas associations. It gradually became linked with winter festivities during the 1860s-1870s and subsequently appeared in numerous parlor song and college music collections throughout the 1880s. The earliest known recording dates to 1889 on an Edison cylinder, though this version is now lost; however, a surviving 1898 Edison Records version remains.
