Madman Across the Water represents Elton John's fourth studio album, released in early November 1971 through DJM and Uni Records. It was the third album John released during that year as his prominence in popular music continued to grow. The album features nine tracks composed and performed by John with lyrics by his collaborator Bernie Taupin, and marks John's venture into progressive rock territory. Rick Wakeman from Yes contributes Hammond organ performance on two of the tracks.
