"Wooden Ships" was created by three songwriters—David Crosby, Paul Kantner, and Stephen Stills—in 1968 aboard a vessel called the Mayan located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Crosby handled the musical composition while Kantner and Stills contributed most of the lyrical content. The track was subsequently recorded by two separate ensembles: Crosby, Stills & Nash and Kantner performing with Jefferson Airplane.
