This country music composition was created by Billy Sherrill and Curly Putman. Putman himself recorded an initial version in spring 1967, releasing it through ABC Records later that year, where it achieved modest chart positions. However, the most commercially successful rendition emerged when David Houston and Tammy Wynette performed it as a duet, reaching the top of country charts in autumn 1967 and also crossing over to mainstream Billboard rankings. Wynette later revisited the song in a subsequent decade with a different duet partner.
